Chandigarh, Oct 11 (IANS) Congress Parliamentary Party president Sonia Gandhi on Saturday wrote a letter to bureaucrat Amneet P Kumar, wife of late Haryana IPS officer Y Puran Kumar, who reportedly died by suicide. He said that the incident shows that even the highest level officials can be deprived of social justice due to discriminatory attitude.

He wrote, “The demise of Shri Y Puran Kumar shows that social justice can be denied even to the highest level of officials due to discriminatory attitudes and preconceived notions of powers that be. Crores of Indians stand with you in your fight for justice.”

This incident will continue to remind us that “even today the prejudiced and biased attitude of those in power deprives even the highest ranking officials of social justice”.

She said, “I and millions of countrymen stand with you on this path of justice.” She said, “I pray that God grants you patience, courage and strength in this difficult situation.”

Inspector General Puran Kumar, who allegedly shot himself with his service revolver at his Chandigarh residence on October 7 and left a “last note”.

The victim’s wife and senior Haryana cadre bureaucrat Amneet P. Kumar has sought justice for her husband in a letter to Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini.

The letter, which was declared urgent and confidential two days ago, expressed grief over what she called a “gross injustice” and “complete administrative inaction” more than 48 hours after her husband’s death.

In a nine-page “suicide note”, Puran Kumar allegedly accused nine serving IPS officers of Haryana Police, one retired IPS officer and three retired IAS officers of “caste-based discrimination”.

The serving officers included DGP Shatrujeet Singh Kapur and Rohtak Superintendent of Police Narendra Bijarniya.

Meanwhile, the government has removed Bijarania from his post and replaced him with Surinder Singh Bhoria as Rohtak Superintendent of Police. Currently no posting has been given in Bijarania.

Congress MP Deepender Hooda met the family of the IPS officer. After the meeting, he said, “If the family has faith in justice, we will also have faith. At present, the family believes that the government has not acted in accordance with the law, the Constitution and morality in the last two-three days. This has caused more pain to the family. This is above politics; this is about the country and every section of the society, this is about justice.”

Another Congress MP Randeep Singh Surjewala said, “In Haryana, when an ADGP rank officer is not being given justice, you can imagine the condition of a common man. If a senior officer like him can become a victim of caste discrimination and be forced to commit suicide, then you can imagine the condition of the common man in the country and especially in Haryana.”

Surjewala questioned, “What was the reason he was not allowed to go to the temple and offer prayers, what was the reason he was not allowed to go home when his father passed away? What was the reason the government did not respond to his letter addressing the issue of casteism? The body of IPS Puran Kumar was forcibly taken from Sector 16 to PGI (for autopsy) without the consent of his family.”
