Jaipur, Oct 11 (IANS) Rajasthan Governor Haribhau Bagde on Saturday stressed the need to include organ donation education from the school level, saying awareness from an early age can help turn this noble cause into a nationwide movement.
Addressing the annual function of the Indian Organ Transplant Society at the Raj Bhavan, the Governor said organ donation is not just a humanitarian act, but “a noble charity” โ one that has the power to save countless lives.
He said, “Every year lakhs of people in our country lose their lives due to lack of organ transplants. To prevent these avoidable deaths, we need to involve more and more people in organ donation.”
Bagde called upon educational institutions to include organ donation awareness in their curriculum, starting from schools to medical colleges, where future health care professionals can play a vital role in promoting this cause.
He urged that organ donation should be made a mass movement across the country. Taking inspiration from Indian tradition, the Governor cited the story of Maharishi Dadhichi, who selflessly donated his bones to create Vajra, the divine weapon for Lord Indra to destroy demons.
“Organ donation has deep roots in our culture. It is an extension of our values โโof compassion and sacrifice,” he said.
The Governor also encouraged physicians and health care professionals to come forward in organ donation and inspire others through their example.
He stressed the importance of preventive health care, balanced nutrition and healthy lifestyle to reduce the burden of organ-related diseases.
During the ceremony, the Governor highlighted the stories of organ donors who have given the gift of life to others, urging citizens to draw inspiration from their selflessness.
The program began with the lighting of the lamp by Governor Bagde, marking the formal inauguration of the festival.
Members of the Indian Organ Transplant Society, medical professionals and social workers participated in the event dedicated to raising awareness about organ donation.
