Betul, Oct 10 (IANS) At least five people have been arrested while a search is on for several others after a minor road incident between two persons (bikers) from different communities turned into communal tension in Madhya Pradesh’s Betul district. Police gave this information on Friday.
According to the police, the incident took place when Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) Betul district chief Shishupal Yadav was allegedly hit by a bike driven by a Muslim youth in a market in Multai, a rich coal mine area adjoining Chhindwara district.
The minor incident escalated when some other people from both sides started fighting and hitting each other.
This created an uproar as neighbors from two different religious communities confronted each other on the road.
When the police reached the spot, the situation came under control and people of both the communities were separated.
Later, a group of people protested at Multai police station and demanded strict action against those who had allegedly “attempted” to harm RSS leader Shishupal Yadav.
On Friday too, heavy police deployment was made by imposing Section 144 in Multai and a police flag march was also conducted.
Additional police forces were called in from nearby Chhindwara and Pandhurna districts.
Betul Superintendent of Police Virendra Jain has also suspended two sub-inspectors on charges of negligence.
BJP leader Rameshwar Sharma, who is the MLA from Bhopal’s Huzur assembly seat, described the incident as “unfortunate”, alleging that unidentified Muslim youth made a deliberate attempt to harm RSS leader Shishupal Yadav.
Speaking to IANS on Friday, Sharma said, “Some Muslim youth tried to harm the RSS chief of Betul district. The state government will take strict action in this matter. I would also request the Muslim leaders to advise the youth of their community not to indulge in violence.”
Betul including Chhindwara is already in shock due to the death of 23 children due to consumption of Coldrif cough syrup.
Of the total children who died, at least three to four were from Betul and the rest were from Chhindwara.
