Agartala, Oct 10 (IANS) With the arrest of another fugitive from neighboring Assam on Friday, three of the six jailbreakers who escaped from a jail in Tripura last week have been caught so far, officials said.
Six prisoners – five undertrials and one serving a life sentence – escaped from Dharmanagar sub-jail in North Tripura district on the morning of October 1 after attacking a guard with sharp weapons, an official said.
A Tripura Police team led by sub-inspector Vishwajit Das of North Tripura’s Dharmanagar police station re-arrested Rahim Ali on Friday from Sribhoomi district (formerly Karimganj district) adjacent to southern Assam, he said.
The official said that Assam Police helped the Tripura Police team in re-arresting Rahim Ali.
The officer said Abdul Patta and Narayan Chandra Dutta were caught from Dharmanagar police station areas on October 1 and October 2 respectively.
North Tripura District Superintendent of Police Avinash Kumar Rai said multiple teams are carrying out intensive search operations in North Tripura and adjoining Unakoti districts to nab the remaining three absconding fugitives.
The undertrials who escaped include Abdul Pata, Rahim Ali, Narayan Chandra Dutta, Roshan Ali and Nazim Uddin, while Sunil Debbarma, accused of serious crimes including murder, is serving life imprisonment.
Narayan Chandra Dutta is a Bangladeshi national who was earlier arrested in Tripura under Passport and Other Acts, while Abdul Pata is a resident of Neelambazar in Shribhoomi district of Assam.
Abdul Pata was earlier arrested under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985 for his involvement in illegal drug-related cases.
A prison department official said the Private Inspector General has suspended all warders Dhananjay Bhanjoy Bhanjoy Bhanjoy and Pallab Kan Bhowmik, Prashikhan Jamatiya, Mohammed Gedu Miya and Notan Lodh of Six Inmas from Dharmanagar sub-jail on the morning of October 1.
The official said disciplinary action would be taken against all five jail staff.
Officials said that immediately after the escape from the jail, various teams of security forces started a massive search operation and the search for them is still going on.
The Superintendent of Police of North Tripura district also led one of the search teams.
All police stations and security posts in North Tripura and adjoining Unakoti districts were put on alert.
“We have also requested the Border Security Force (BSF) to keep a strict vigil on the India-Bangladesh border so that jail escapees do not cross the border,” the official said.
North Tripura district shares inter-state border with Assam and Mizoram, besides the international border with Bangladesh.
“After the incident, all exit points of Assam, Mizoram and Bangladesh have been sealed to prevent prisoners who escaped from the jail from leaving the state,” the official said.
