kim jong un jong u vowed to change north korea The country’s state media said Friday it was “the world’s best socialist paradise.”

Kim made the comments during a speech in Pyongyang on Thursday night during celebrations marking the 80th anniversary of Korea’s ruling Workers’ Party and ahead of a military parade to mark the occasion on Friday.

In practice, North Korea has been ruled by the Kim family for all of those 80 years. It remains one of the world’s poorest countries based on per capita GDP and ranks 118th out of 127 countries on the Global Hunger Index, with one in five children suffering from stunted growth due to malnutrition.

Nonetheless, the North Korean dictator celebrated the party’s leadership Thursday night and portrayed it as a revolutionary force that has built a “powerful socialist state” despite wars, sanctions and global isolation.

He credited the party with developing nuclear capabilities – which he said were designed to deter the US – and leading the country through several “transformations”. according to Rodong SinmunMr Kim said: “The last 80 years were indeed complex and difficult, yet meaningful and glorious.”

Mr Kim reportedly claimed during his speech, “Historically, there is no country like ours in the world that has had to undertake so much work for national defense and construction, while constantly facing pressure, interference and threats of aggression by external forces.” “Our Party and government are still resisting the brutal political and military measures of pressure from our adversaries by adopting tough policies, sticking to firm principles, and adopting brave, unwavering countermeasures.”

Earlier this month, speaking at an arms exhibition in Pyongyang, Mr Kim accused the United States and its allies of stepping up military activities in the region. The US, Japan and South Korea hold regular joint exercises in the region, which they say are necessary to prepare security and prevent unpredictable and dangerous leadership from Pyongyang.

According to KCNA, Kim said, “In direct proportion to the US military buildup in Korea, our strategic interest in the region has also increased, and we have allocated special assets to key targets of interest accordingly.”

“The US-ROK nuclear alliance is making rapid progress, and they are conducting a variety of drills to carry out dangerous scenarios,” Mr Kim said, referring to South Korea by its formal name, the Republic of Korea. “The adversary … has to be concerned about where their security environment is moving,” he said, without elaborating on the nature of the “special assets.”

KCNA photos showed the North Korean leader walking past missiles and other weapons displayed inside, surrounded by senior generals.

Mr Kim recently attended a military parade in Beijing with Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin to mark the anniversary of the end of World War II.
