Patna, Oct 9 (IANS) As the India Bloc is close to finalizing its seat-sharing arrangements for the Bihar Assembly elections, the Communist Party of India (Marxist) on Thursday expressed hope that the alliance will fight the elections unitedly and defeat the NDA to “save the Constitution”.
The development comes as the Congress on Wednesday cleared the names of 25 candidates for constituencies it considers traditional strongholds, a decision taken during the Central Election Committee meeting at Indira Bhawan in Delhi.
Senior leaders attended the meeting held amid ongoing seat-sharing talks with key coalition partners in the India Bloc – especially the Rashtriya Janata Dal and the Left parties.
Although the decision on the remaining seats is expected soon, there is speculation of internal tension regarding the selection of the Chief Minister’s face and the post of Deputy Chief Minister during the talks.
CPI(M) general secretary MA Baby reaffirmed the Left’s determination to stand with the India Bloc.
Speaking to IANS, he said, “We will fight the elections unitedly. I will not say anything about seat sharing right now. The grand alliance will win and the end of BJP from Bihar will begin.”
Speaking to IANS, CPI(M) leader Ashok Dhawale said there is an optimistic atmosphere for a solution.
“We will definitely find a solution. It is likely to happen in the next two to three days. The atmosphere of discussion is good and it should be resolved within two to three days,” he said.
He said, “This election is going to be very important. On one side there is vote theft, corruption, communalism and anti-people policies. On the other side, there is the Grand Alliance, which includes parties from our Indian bloc, which is ready to challenge all these issues. There will be a tough competition between these two parties, and we are confident that no matter how much the people (NDA) try to buy votes, this government will have to be removed at any cost.”
CPI(M) MLA Ajay Kumar told IANS that the alliance is ready and confident of victory. Ajay Kumar told IANS, “We are fully prepared. The grand alliance in the form of India block is fully prepared and we are confident that the result will be very good. The grand alliance government will be formed.”
He said the number of seats the party will contest will be almost the same as in the last election and seat-sharing talks are close to finalisation.
CPI (ML) general secretary Dipankar Bhattacharya said the negotiation process was nearing completion.
“The process is on and I think everything will be finalized in a day or two. More important than the seats is the SIR attack, in which about 10 per cent of people whose names should have been in the voter list were removed,” he said.
He warned that Bihar voters would consider it an attack on constitutional institutions and the rights of common people, backward communities and the poor, and predicted a strong public reaction in the elections.
