Bhubaneswar, Oct 8 (IANS) Amid allegations of communal tension in Cuttack and deteriorating law and order situation in the state following the murder of a BJP leader in Berhampur, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, who also holds the Home portfolio, on Wednesday said some vested interest groups were trying to malign the image of Odisha, which is known as a peaceful state.
Manjhi said this while reviewing the law and order situation in the state during a high-level meeting at Lok Seva Bhawan here on Wednesday.
The Chief Minister also directed the state police administration to keep a strict vigil on anti-social elements, miscreants and other suspicious persons in all areas of Odisha.
According to a statement issued by the Chief Minister’s Office, CM Majhi said that some vested interest groups are attempting to malign the image of Odisha, which is known as a peaceful state.
He also stressed the need to deal strictly with such elements and directed senior police officers to remain alert against these anti-social elements.
During the meeting, the officials told the Chief Minister that the situation in Cuttack has become normal.
Curfew has been lifted and internet services have also been restored in Cuttack urban area. However, CM Majhi directed the police to remain alert and avoid any carelessness even after normalcy is restored in the city.
He ordered Odisha Police to continue patrolling and deployment of police force in all sensitive areas.
The Chief Minister advised senior police officers to continue talks with leaders of various community groups to ensure that communal harmony is completely restored in the “city of brotherhood”.
Notably, Majhi had earlier also appealed to the residents of Cuttack to bring back peace and order in the city known for brotherhood among different communities.
Expressing grief over the brutal murder of Berhampur lawyer and social activist late Pitabas Panda, CM Majhi directed the police to arrest the criminals involved as soon as possible.
He advised the police to take steps to ensure that the culprits are brought to justice and given exemplary punishment.
Advisor to the Chief Minister and top police officer Prakash Mishra, Chief Secretary Manoj Ahuja, Additional Chief Secretary (Home) Satyabrata Sahu, Director General of Police YB Khurania, Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister Shashwat Mishra and other senior police officers were present in the meeting.
