thomas tuchel They say England Will go into next summer’s World Cup as “underdogs” with “no chance” of succeeding North America Unless they work as a team.
With back-to-back European Championship finalists close to qualifying for a tournament, they are considered to be the frontrunners to win.
Tuchel has only two more camps before announcing his World Cup squad and he has raised eyebrows by leaving out some big-name players for the October friendly against England. wales And qualifiers in Latvia.
But the German head coach says it is all about building a team that is capable of becoming the first men’s team to win a major trophy since Sir Alf Ramsey’s heroics of 1966.
He said of this month’s team selection, “We put together a team with the guys who were available and they performed very well, so we went with them again.”
“No one said we couldn’t do the same with them or maybe do the same level of work with others (who aren’t here).
“But for the moment we stand by our choice and the radical statement is that we do not collect the most talented players. Certainly not.
“We try to gather people who have the glue and togetherness to ultimately become the best team because we need to come up with the best team.
“We will arrive at the World Cup as underdogs because we have not won it for decades and we will be playing against teams who have won it repeatedly during that time, so we need to arrive as a team otherwise we have no chance.”
England have reached at least the quarter-finals of the last four tournaments, but Tuchel believes they are vulnerable “because of the history, the climate and the circumstances”.
“If you’ve never won Wimbledon, you might be one of the favorites but you’re not the favourite,” the England boss said.
“You can go and if you get close, OK, you’re in the pool, but you’re not the favorite. It’s just the way it is.
“There’s Brazil, there’s Argentina, Spain, France and they’ve done that recently.
“That doesn’t mean we don’t have a chance and we know that very well. First we will qualify and then we will know why we are going there.”
The underdog mentality helped England reach the World Cup semi-finals in 2018 in predecessor Gareth Southgate’s first tournament in charge and Tuchel believes that mentality could benefit them again.
“Yes, I think it will help us if we are clear about our role after we arrive,” he said.
“I don’t see why we should put this burden on ourselves that ‘We’re big favourites, it’s a disaster if we don’t win this.’ Why would we do this? When did we last win it?
“Let’s go step by step and it just gets to the second step. We build a team that is ready to go step by step and play as a team and no one expects to play against us.”
Former captain Tuchel insisted that in a week “teams win trophies, no one else”. Steven Gerrard Admittedly egos got out of control and the hopes of England’s so-called ‘Golden Generation’ were dashed.
“I heard about it,” Tuchel said. “I don’t listen to anything else.
“When I listen to people talk about their titles or their missed opportunities in international football I always hear the same song: We’ve been a team or we haven’t been a team. It’s always the same song in international football.
“I also think that’s the title in club football, but even more so if you’re together 24/7 for a nine-day period, and then as long as is possible in America, you have to be a group, you have to be a strong group.”
