Tour guide Lee Berryman, 57, was bitten twice by a shark while surfing South Australia D’Estrees Bay, in an area known as the Seward Kangaroo Island,

The shark is suspected to be a large bronze whaler, according to news.com.au,

“It probably only took me four minutes to get on the rocks, it felt like half an hour because he kept coming back. He actually had three chomps, three different lines, three different lines of bites, slowly working his way to my a***,” he said.

“I could feel him bit me, I knew I was bitten.”

At one point, he recalled that a SEAL tried to disguise himself as a “security device,” he told the channel.

Once at the hospital, Mr. Berryman needed 50 stitches. “I wasn’t bleeding … but it was coming through the holes in my wetsuit,” he explained. 7 news,

Shark Watch South Australia said the incident occurred at approximately 1:37 a.m. local time on Tuesday.

“Public reports to SWSA indicate a surfer was on his way to the hospital after being bitten by a shark 2x from a bronze whaler that was chasing seals around the bay,” the organization wrote on its social media.

Bronze whaler sharks are found in coastal areas and offshore in South Australia. They can weigh up to 300 kg and grow up to 3.3 meters in length.
