Train journey can become a burden rather than a boon many times, especially when you need to revive the date of your journey. For example, if you plan to travel on October 15 and for some unavoidable reason, you need to postpone your journey for another date, the current process needs the existing ticket to cancel a rebook for another date, it depends on that you cancel the ticket close to the time of the journey.

Therefore, in the current cancellation structure, travelers who cancel their confirmed tickets between 48 and 12 hours before departure, lose 25% fare. This percentage increases further for the cancellation of the departure, and once the reservation chart is ready, the refund is not allowed, thus the passenger loses a significant amount.

Come January, passengers will be allowed to confirm railway tickets without paying any additional cost. Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav recently said that a new provision will be introduced in January 2026 which wants to reduce the tension and financial loss associated with the last minute travel plan changes. Instead of canceling the ticket, passengers will have the option to change their journey online, without facing punishment.

However, Vaishnav made it clear that re -determining tickets and getting confirmed tickets for another date would depend on the availability of the seat. According to reports, “There is no guarantee to get a confirmation ticket for the new date.” If the price of the new ticket is higher than the original, the passenger will need to pay the difference in fare.

The move is expected to benefit millions of travelers across the country, which currently face limited flexibility and financial losses when they need to change the dates of the journey unexpectedly.

Meanwhile, the Cabinet Committee on economic matters chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi approved four major multi-tracking railway projects in Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat and Chhattisgarh. , Projects with an estimated investment of 24,634 crores aim to promote capacity and improve connectivity in 18 districts.

A railway officer was quoted by PTI, saying that the projects would expand the existing network of Indian Railways to about 894 km, which would enable the smooth movement of people, goods and services. The approved works include a third and fourth row laying between Wardha and Bhusaval, which is in the 84 km fourth row between 314 km in Maharashtra, 84 km between Gondia and Dongargarh, which has been covered to Maharashtra and Chhattisgarh and 259 km third and a 259 km third and a 259 km third and fourth row between Ratlam in Chowkore and Gajra.

A statement by the Railway Ministry said that the approved multi-tracking project will increase connectivity in about 3,633 villages, which have a population of about 85.84 lakhs and two aspiratory districts (Vidisha and Rajanandgaon).

Vaishnav said that the expansion of line capacity would promote mobility and improve the operational efficiency and reliability of railway services. PTI said to him, “Projects are in line with the vision of a new India of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, which will make people of the region ‘immensely’ through widespread development in the region, which will increase their employment/self-employment opportunities.”
