Bhunswar, 7 October (IANS) All India Congress Committee (AICC) on Tuesday declared tribal leader Ghasiram Majhi its candidate for the Nuapada by -election, which is to be supported on November 1.
According to a press statement issued by AICC on Tuesday, “Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge has approved the candidature of Ghasiram Majhi as Congress candidate for the upcoming by -election of Odisha Assembly from Nuapada constituency.”
After not giving tickets by the party, Majhi contested the 2024 assembly elections as an independent candidate from Nuapada constituency.
Although he lost to the late Bharatiya Janata Dal (BJD) leader Rajendra Dholakia by a margin of 10,881 votes in the 2024 assembly elections, he secured more votes from Congress candidate and then Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee President Sharat Patnaik.
Including the 2024 assembly elections, Majhi has contested three times from the said constituency, but lost all the time.
He was a Congress candidate during both 2014 and 2019 Lok Sabha elections.
The Congress has again fielded Majhi this time with the aim of influencing tribal votes.
The Nuapada assembly seat is vacant after the death of former minister and senior BJD leader Rajendra Dholakia on 8 September.
The Election Commission of India on Monday announced the by -election date for Nuapada assembly constituency.
Odisha Chief Election Commissioner (CEO) RS Gopalan said on Monday, “The Gazette notification for the by -election will be released on October 13. The last date for filing nomination is 20 October, while the nomination will be investigated on 22 October.”
The last date for withdrawal of candidature is 24 October.
Voting will be held on 11 November and counting of votes will be held on 14 November.
The CEO of Odisha also said that all the procedures related to the Nuapada seat by -election would be completed by 16 November.
He also said that with the announcement of the by -election on Monday, the model code of conduct in the entire Nuapada district has come into force with immediate effect.
Gopalan also said that as per the ongoing special summary amendment of the voter list in Nuapada, the total number of voters is 2,48,256 as of September 15, including 1,22,103 male voters, 1,26,132 female voters and 21 transgender voters.
