An international ceasefire monitor says that the parties of the faltering peace agreement of South Sudan have recruited new fighters and kidnapped the children to participate in a conflict that observers have warned that they may widen the civil war again.

Tuesday’s statement in the capital, alreadySaid that in June, South Sudan’s army opened a recruitment drive for 4,000 forces for peace and other purposes and opened a new training center in August.

The restructured joint monitoring and evaluation commission, or RJMEC, is a ceasefire monitoring body known as Igad by a regional block.

Its statement also said that the body has received a report that all the parties of the struggle have kidnapped or gathered children to participate, and that fighters are engaged in sexual violence.

The reports shared with the United Nations Security Council are likely to worry that the South Sudan government and the opposition groups are preparing to move forward.

Fighting loyal to Raik Machchar between South Sudan’s army and opposition fighters – who faces a criminal trial after President Salwa Keer, said he had suspended him as his deputy – intensified from the end of 2024.

It has expressed concern that the 2018 peace agreement that ends the country’s civil war is collapsing.

The agreement formed a transitional government, which was once aimed at choosing its provisions, such as the integration of forces in the National Army. The transitional period has been extended twice, mostly in September 2024 recently. International supervisors and analysts say that many provisions are incomplete.

RJMEC interim chairman George Egre Owino said at the Tuesday meeting, “If the existing challenges are not addressed immediately, there is a high risk of all the benefits already made upside down, and can cause the collapse of the agreement,” RJMEC interim president George Egre Ovino explained Tuesday.

The meeting was attended by senior members of the South Sudan government, representatives of military officials, as well as the major opposition parties and most ambassadors present in the country.

This was the first time the body was found since February after the cancellation of the meetings, due to some security concerns.

A statement read by the country’s second most senior officer Anita Kiki Gabeho said that the conflict between January and September resulted in civil casualties to increase by 59% in 2024 compared to the same period.

He said that roughly 321,000 people were displaced by fighting, and the incidents affecting human reach had doubled from the previous year, they said.

Minister of Cabinet Affairs of South Sudan, Martin Elia Lomuro reduced fear. He said, “I would like to assure you that your concerns are in force, but they are not harmful and are about to derail the peace process,” he told the meeting.

Further apprehensions of the war are Machar’s test, which faces allegations including crimes against terrorism and humanity. He is under the arrest in the house since March after a militia since March. NasirAccording to officials, more than 250 soldiers murdered.

The government alleges that Machar and others provoked violence in his party and provided funds to Militia. Macker has denied the allegations and said that he took several steps to reduce the fight and vacate the trapped soldiers.
