Siddaramaiah says

Bengaluru, Oct 7 (IANS) Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Tuesday termed the shoe incident involving Chief Justice of India Bra Gavai as “an act of Manuwadi elements”.

“The Chief Justice of India has himself forgiven the incident,” he told reporters here.

“I condemn the mentality of throwing a shoe at the CJI. This is an attempt by Manuwadis. This has not bothered the CJI, and he is carrying out the responsibilities normally. It is leniency to forgive the person who carried out the act.”

Siddaramaiah said, “Sanatanis and Manuwadis are behind the Act.”

Manuism refers to an ideology based on the Manasmriti, an ancient Hindu text attributed to the sage Manu, and is often used to describe caste-based social hierarchy or discrimination in Indian society.

Meanwhile, state RDPR, IT and BT minister Priyank Kharge has questioned the late response to the development by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. “The Prime Minister has said that the incident involving shoe throwing at the Chief Justice of India has angered every Indian. The incident happened at 11.30 am, but PM Modi responded only at 8.29 am”, he said in a post on X.

Kharge said, “PM Modi took nine hours to react. Had it been about a cricket match, he would have tweeted within moments! He said it angers every Indian, yet Union Home Minister Amit Shah did not react or condemn it.”

“The BJP did not react or condemn it. No Union minister spoke. No BJP leader took to the streets. Instead, BJP and Sangh Parivar supporters are reportedly celebrating the shoe attack. Seeing this, PM Modi remained silent,” he said.

“Why is the BJP, which had rallied like a monsoon crow on questions of vote manipulation, now silent? Is the dignity of the Constitution and the sanctity of the judiciary not important for the BJP?” Kharge asked the question.

“This was not just an attack on an individual; it is an attack on the Constitution, carried out by an ideology that Modi himself represents and nurtures. If Prime Minister Narendra Modi cared about the outrage, he should have spoken out against the ideology that it represents,” he said.

A dramatic incident unfolded in the Supreme Court on Monday when an elderly man attempted to throw a shoe at Chief Justice of India Gavai during a court hearing. The shoes, however, fell short of the bench, and security personnel quickly restrained the man.

Undeterred by the disruption, Chief Justice Gavai addressed the court, saying, “I am the last person to be affected by such things,” before the proceedings continued as usual.

Eyewitnesses said the incident occurred soon after the first case of the day was taken up. The man, later identified as Kishore Rakesh through a proximity card, which is usually issued to lawyers and clerks, allegedly shouted slogans, such as “India will not tolerate the insult to Sanatan,” before attempting to throw a shoe. Their motives are unclear, and security agencies are currently interrogating them.

The dramatic incident came in the wake of criticism directed at Chief Justice Gavai over a remark he made during the hearing of a public interest litigation regarding the reconstruction of the damaged statue of Lord Vishnu in Khajuraho. Rejecting the petition, Gavai had reportedly said, “Go and ask the deity to do something himself”, a comment which provoked a row on social media.

Responding to the controversy, Chief Justice Gavai clarified, “Someone informed me that my remarks were portrayed in a certain way on social media. I respect all religions.”
