Guwahati, 6 October (IANS) continued pressure on Shyamakunu Mahanant, the organizer of the North East India Festival, who remains in police custody for his alleged involvement in the untimely death of veteran Assamese singer Zubin Garg.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Monday that the Enforcement Directorate (ED) and IT (IT) department will soon start an investigation into alleged financial irregularities associated with Mahnta.
Speaking to reporters in Guwahati, Sarma said that the state government is already in touch with both central agencies to ensure a professional and transparent investigation.
He said, “I am confident that the ED and IT department will look into the financial discrepancies associated with Shyamakunu Mahat.
The Chief Minister also commented that Mahata was known for having a relationship with influential persons.
“His primary job was taking pictures with various people. If the pictures stored on his mobile phone are made public, they will be involved in politicians, journalists and many others. However, there is no relevance to investigate such photographs. We also have records of many individuals who travel to Bangkok, but are unconstrained by those details.”
On the ongoing investigation, Sarma revealed that Roop Kamal Kalita, a resident of Assamia, a resident of Singapore, is expected to reach Guwahati on Tuesday to attend the interrogation.
“We hope that other people will follow soon. Some are still not ready to return, but we are maintaining pressure because their statements are important to end the investigation quickly,” he said.
The Chief Minister clarified that the Assam Police will not visit Singapore, as he lacks jurisdiction in another country.
“The Center has already called for a mutual legal aid treaty (MLA) between India and Singapore,” he said, through this, the Singapore government will share the findings of its investigation about the death of Zubeen Garg with Indian authorities. ”
Sources said that CID had issued notices to eight Assamese NRIs located in Singapore which were present on the boat during the incident. Except Kalita, no one has replied yet.
The state government can consider strict measures, including passport cancellation, against those who refuse to cooperate in the investigation.
