Kolkata, October 6 (IANS), amidst a serious crisis and loss of life, officially recorded as 23 dead in the hills of North Bengal, Terai and Duers areas as till Monday morning, after heavy rains and landslides, West Bengal Chief Minister Mmata Banerjee has announced compensation and jobs for the families of the victims.
Before leaving for North Bengal on Monday afternoon to survey the affected areas there, the Chief Minister said that each of the aggrieved families would be provided with a one -time compensation of Rs 5,00,000.
At the same time, he said, the state government will provide a householder job to a member of every such family in the state police.
“I know that money can never be an alternative to human life. But the state government has its own social responsibility. So this offer to offer compensation and job is part of the state government’s responsibility. It is necessary that the families of the victims do not need to depend on others for their existence in future,” he said.
Speaking on the occasion, the Chief Minister claimed that the release of water from neighboring Bhutan caused the situation in North Bengal and claimed that the flood situation in North Bengal is a “man -made” disaster.
According to him, while the water released from Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) dams was responsible for the flood situation in South Bengal, the same action in Bhutan created a crisis in North Bengal.
The Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Assembly, Suvendu Adikari ridiculed the Chief Minister and claimed that the general faults from the Chief Minister have continued even after the disaster in North Bengal.
“When she blames DVC for the situation in South Bengal, she blames Bhutan for a crisis in North Bengal. The Chief Minister does not understand what the priority of the state government should be, and that is why she always resorts to the blame. Many times her goal is DVA and many times it is Bhutan.
