Kolkata, October 5 (IANS) BJP leaders and workers led the Leader of the Opposition in the state assembly, the Suvandu officer on Sunday led a procession in Kolkata, targeting the West Bengal government on recent electrocution deaths in the city.
The official on Sunday slammed the Durga Puja Carnival to the state government when North Bengal was defeated by torrential rains, causing large -scale landslides, killing at least 20 people.
The procession was organized by the cultural organization ‘Khola Hawa’, which is the BJP’s think tank in West Bengal. After denying permission, the Kolkata Police filed a petition in the Calcutta High Court which allowed for the protest rally on Sunday.
“Nearly 10 people died on 23 September after coming in contact with electric wires exposed on waterlogged roads in Kolkata. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee should have postponed Durga Puja Carnival in view of the tragedy. She should have resigned after the incident.”
The procession was held from the College Square to Esplaynade in Central Kolkata.
Later, BJP state president Samik Bhattacharya slammed Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to move forward with Pooja Carnival.
Bhattacharya said, “CM should not have participated in the carnival, after the report of so many people in Darjeeling Hills earlier in the day. It shows the insensitive attitude of the TMC government.”
Reacting to the statements of BJP leaders, State General Secretary of Trinamool Congress (TMC) Kunal Ghosh said that the BJP is involved in cheap politics on deaths in North Bengal.
Ghosh said, “The BJP has no other task but to attack an incident on the state government that attracts global recognition.”
About 116 award winners Durga Puja Committees are participating in the Puja Carnival.
