New Delhi, October 4 (IANS) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday paid rich tribute to two huge figures of India’s independence movement from Tamil Nadu – Tiruppur Kumaran and Subramania Shiva – the source of inspiration and ideals as a nation for unity and development of their sacrifices and ideals towards a unity and development.
In a post on X, the Prime Minister wrote, “Today, we remember Tiruppur Kumaran and Subramania Shiva, who have two saint sons of Bharat Mata, who dedicated their lives for India’s independence and to nurture the spirit of patriotism. As we move forward for more national integration and progress, their contribution continues.”
PM Modi received the title of Tiruppur Kumaran – Kodi Katha Kumaran (Kumaran protecting the flag) asked for his extraordinary courage and final sacrifice. In 1932, during a protest against the British colonial rule, Kumaran refused to go to the banned Indian national flag that he was carrying, even succumbed to the police attack. His death, holding the tricolor, disregarding freedom and became a powerful symbol of love, especially for the youth of Tamil Nadu.
The Prime Minister also recalled the legacy of a fiery writer, speaker and social reformer Subramania Shiva, who used his pen and oratory to awaken nationalist pride among countless young Indians. VO Chidambaram Pillai and a close aide of other revolutionaries, Shiva faced frequent imprisonment and serious illness due to his activism.
His unwavering spirit and writing, including his magazine Gyanabhanu, helped sow seeds of resistance and cultural confidence at the time when colonial repression was at its peak. PM Modi said, “The struggles of these two great men lost countless lives and the Hardes reminded India to free India from colonial rule.” “His fearless devotion and love for the motherland should continue to guide our journey as a nation.”
By exposing Kumaran’s courage and the intellectual fire of Shiva, the Prime Minister underlined the need to remember the sacrifices that created independent India and translate that feeling into unity, flexibility and further development.
