CM Pema Khandu in Arunachal expresses concern over rising HIV/AIDS cases

Itanagar, 3 October (IANS) Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu on Friday expressed concern over the increasing incidents of HIV/AIDS in the northeastern state.

The Chief Minister on Friday chaired the AIDS meeting on the Third State Council and reviewed the ongoing steps to curb the total HIV/AIDS status and the spread of the disease.

State Health and Family Welfare Minister Biram Wahge and senior officials were present at the meeting held at CM’s office, result Vihar.

Taking into the social media platform X, CM Khandu wrote: “The spread of HIV positive matters is a matter of deep concern. It is necessary that we take immediate and effective steps to curb its spread, fight ignorance and end social instability.” He said: “Honor, along with cabinet colleagues, honorable advisors, senior officials, NGOs, and CBOs chaired the third State Council (SCA) meeting of Arunachal Pradesh State AIDS Control Society today.

The Chief Minister said on a separate position on X: “The second meeting of Arunachal Pradesh Psychiatry Control Authority (APPSCA). The meeting underlined that consumers are victims who need care and support, not punished. Now this danger has focused on suppliers and pedals for real drivers of this danger.”

“We also discussed the importance of rehabilitating rehabilitation and consultation features, intensifying the rift on the supply chain, and formed a community-driven movement for a drug-free Arunachal,” said Khandu.

After the SCA meeting, Health and Family Welfare Minister Biyuram Wahge said that the spread of HIV/AIDS in the state.

He said recent data suggests that HIV/AIDS transmission through infected needles (66.55 percent) is more than unsafe sex (30.55 percent), underlining the immediate need to deal with drug abuse along with HIV prevention.

The minister said that Friday’s meeting pledged to strengthen awareness about the consumption of HIV and intoxicants, intensifying the Nasha Mutt Bharat Abhiyan, and created an united and multi-regional reaction. According to National AIDS Control Organization (NACO) data, HIV/AIDS is 2.73 percent in adult circulation rate Mizoram and 1.37 percent in Nagaland. HIV/AIDS adult circulation rate in two northeastern states (Mizoram and Nagaland) is also much higher than in other 35 states and center areas.

According to NACO data, the prevalence rate in four northeastern states – Manipur (0.87 percent), Meghalaya (0.43 percent), Tripura (0.37 percent), and Arunachal Pradesh (0.25 percent) – the national average is more than 0.20 percent. Only two Northeast states – Assam (0.13 percent) and Sikkim (0.11 percent) – is less than the national average.
