Work on indigenous ‘Sudarshan Chakra’ has started: Air Force Chief

New Delhi, October 3 (IANS) In a historic announcement, which indicates a major jump in India’s defense preparations, Air Chief Marshal AP Singh revealed that the work has officially began on ‘Sudarshan Chakra’, which is the indigenous version of India of the Iron Dome Air Defense System.

Speaking at a press briefing in New Delhi, the IAF chief emphasized the immediate need for self -sufficiency in defense technology, stating, “We have already put our head together with DRDO, we have started working towards developing a system, which will definitely be in the heart of our own integrated air command and control system.”

The Sudarshan Chakra project aims to develop a multi -level air defense gradient capable of preventing and neutralizing air threats such as missiles, drones and enemy aircraft.

Inspired by Israel’s Iron Dome, which has proved highly effective in war scenarios, the India version will be designed to meet the country’s unique strategic and geographical needs.

Air Chief Marshal Singh highlighted the increasing relevance of air power in the modern war, recently cited Operation Sindoor as a turn. He said, “The relevance of air power is at the forefront after Operation Sindoor,” he said, referring to India’s rapid deployment and exhibiting operations displaying accurate strike capabilities.

Although the details of Operation Sindoor are classified, defense analysts believe that it included coordinated air and land exercises in the high-day range landscape.

Underlining the importance of intentions in defense, or the importance of self -sufficiency, the IAF chief stressed that India can no longer afford to depend on foreign technologies.

He said, “Aatmanirbharta is an immediate need; we cannot depend,” he said, indigenous innovation is the key to strategic autonomy.

He also talked about the developed nature of war, warning that future struggles would be contrary to the previously seen. He said, “The character of war is constantly developing. The next struggle will not be similar to the final-we should be ready for the future,” he insisted.

The statement reflects the widespread push towards modernization of the Indian Air Force, including investing in artificial intelligence, unmanned systems, and cyber war capabilities.

The Sudarshan Chakra initiative is expected to include cooperation between the Indian Air Force, Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) and private defense manufacturers. If successful, it will mark an important milestone in a trip to India towards creating a strong, indigenous defense ecosystem, which is capable of combating emerging hazards in a rapidly unstable global landscape.
