New Delhi, October 2 (IANS), in a rigorous denial for misunderstanding on social media, the Press Information Bureau (PIB) has issued a fact investigation that the digital converted video of Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) Leh, Ghulam Muhammad is being broadcast with false claims about the arrest of Climate activist Sonchuk.
The video manipulated using Artificial Intelligence described the ADC as false that Wangchuk was arrested under the direction of the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA). PIB’s fact check unit clearly stated that ADC Leh has not made any such statement, and the video is a deepfake designed to mislead the public and provoke nervousness.
The PIB warns, “Fake AI videos are spread to mislead and cause nervousness.”
The video was detected in the video immediately after the arrest of Wangchuk under the National Security Act (NSA) on 26 September, demanding the sixth schedule situation and the state for Ladakh after violent protests in Leh.
Unrest killed four people and injured around 90. Wangchuk was later transferred to Jodhpur Jail in Rajasthan. This is not the first example of deepfac content targeting officers in Ladakh.
Earlier, a similar AI-related video incorrectly blamed Ladakh DGP SD Singh Jamwal, claiming that Wangchuk’s arrest was ordered by the Defense Minister.
That video was also debated by PIB and was filed by the Leh police under the Indian Joint Code and IT Act sections.
The circulation of such manipulative videos creates serious concerns about the weapons of AI technology to distort public discourse and reduce confidence in institutions.
Experts have warned that Deepfac can destroy democratic procedures by making statements from public authorities, especially during politically sensitive times.
The Leh administration has reiterated its commitment to maintain peace and transparency, and appealed to the public to avoid sharing unacceptable materials.
Meanwhile, the Citizen Samaj Group continues to demand a peaceful resolution for the release of Wangchuk and the political demands of Ladakh.
Since misinformation is rapidly sophisticated, facts-zone agencies and digital literacy are emerging as an important tool to protect the public trust.
PIB’s sharp response underlines the importance of institutional vigilance at the age of AI-related deception.
