With heavy hearts, devotees bid farewell to Goddess Durga in the northeast

AARAartala/Guwaati, 2 October (IANS) The five -day Durga Puja Festival, which is celebrated with enthusiasm in Tripura and other northeastern states, ended on Thursday according to the religious program with the onset of immersion of idols on the occasion of Vijaya Dashami.

The Chief Minister and top political leaders were busy visiting the pandals and participating in various rituals of Durga Puja, for which the security system was tightened and various measures were kept to keep the festival peacefully.

Dussehra is also celebrated separately by people from different communities at many places. However, according to Tripura Police reports, only 18 percent of 3,000 idols were immersed with devotees in Tripura on Thursday, including men, women and children, which were to bid Goddess Durga and her children with a heavy heart as the biggest annual festival of Hindu.

Amidst the atmosphere of sadness before immersion, on Thursday, marrying women of various ages in various northeastern states, after traditions, bid farewell to Goddess Durga with Vermilian, betel nut and sweets on the occasion of ‘Vijaya Dashami’.

As part of ‘Sindoor Khela’, married women applied vermilion to the goddess and offered it sweets, then applied sindoor to each other’s faces.

In Guwahati, before the immersion of some idols in Brahmaputra and other major rivers in Assam, colorful immersion processions moved to various cities. Although some idols were submerged in Assam, Tripura and other northeastern states on Thursday, most of the idols are likely to sink in the next two to three days.

Traditional themes, popular issues and events dominated the puja pandals throughout the northeastern region, in which historical events were part of the subjects for decorations.

In Agartala, according to traditions, the idols of the Durgabari temple lead the Dashami procession and playing the national song to the state police band for the first time to be diverted in Dasmighat with the state capital.
