PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana to Reach 30,000 Homes in Coimbatore by 2027

Chennai, 1 October (IANS) The Coimbatore region of Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation Limited (TNPDCL) is ready to install solar panels on roof on 30,000 houses by March 2027 by March 2027 as part of the Prime Minister Surya Ghar Mufli Yojana by March 2027.

This initiative is an important step to promote clean energy use and to help cut electricity expenses.

Statewide, TNPDCL has planned to cover 1.8 lakh houses with roof solar systems at the same time. Since the launch of the plan in February 2024, about 36,000 houses have already installed solar panels in Tamil Nadu, of which 6,000 are the highest in the coimbatore region alone – the state.

In the Coimbatore Metro Division, which includes the main urban areas of the city, 2,500 houses have adopted roof solar.

The objective of this scheme is to help residential consumers to generate their power and reduce the dependence on the grid. It provides 60 percent subsidy at the cost of solar units up to 2KW capacity and is 40 percent at the additional cost for systems between 2KW and 3KW.

The subsidy is cap at 3KW, which translates to Rs 30,000 for 1KW unit, Rs 60,000 for 2KW and Rs 78,000 for 3kw or more. The price of rooftop solar systems is about Rs 70,000 for 1KW, Rs 1.4 lakh for 2KW and Rs 3 lakh for 3KW.

Many banks are paying loans at about 6 percent interest, making it easier for homes to adopt.

The surplus solar energy generated can be deposited for consumers’ power accounts and adjusting against bills by the end of the financial year.

Additionally, the five villages have been selected for the “Model Solar Village” competition – Arsur, Solvampalam, Purapalayam, Thetipalayam, and Kondayamapalayam.

The panchayat will win a cash prize of one crore rupees to receive the most solar connection within six months. Officials said the roof solar is expected to be more accessible by subsidy, easy financing, and outreach initiative, while Tamil Nadu’s big renewable energy to support the goals and to reduce demand on the power grid.
