Police lockup was accused of tampering in Khanti, Jharkhand

Officials on Tuesday morning arrested a 25 -year -old man arrested for molesting mysterious circumstances inside the Murhu police station lockup in Khunti district of Jharkhand on 30 September (IANS).

The deceased has been identified as Rahul Manjhi, a resident of Meral village under the Murhu police station area.

Police claim that Manji committed suicide by hanging himself in a lockup toilet.

According to officials, Manjhi was taken into custody late on Monday night when the villagers accused him of molesting a minor girl in Mahil village.

Reports show that Manjhi went to the village, along with his son, where a dispute broke out during breakfast.

Local people alleged that he abused a girl, causing an uproar. Although Manjhi initially managed to escape in his original village, a group of villagers of Mahil reached their home, forcibly brought it back, and handed it over to the police.

Superintendent of Police Manish Toppo said that a case of molestation was registered and Manjhi was arrested on the basis of allegations made by the villagers.

He said that the accused was registered overnight in the lockup of the Muhu police station. “On Tuesday morning, he was found dead, apparently hung himself in the toilet. An investigation is going on,” Toppo said.

After the incident, senior police officers arrived at the station and started an investigation.

The body has been sent for the post -mortem examination to find out the exact cause of death.

Manjhi’s family has accused the foul play and demanded a fair and transparent inquiry.

“We want the truth to come out. He was in police custody; how can such an incident happen?” A family member said.
