Kolkata, 22 September (IANS) An on-duty police constable died, while two other people were injured in a road accident outside Eco Park in New Town near Kolkata on Sunday night, police informed on Monday morning.
The deceased police constable has been identified as astrology Debnath (38), who was posted at the Eco Park Police Station under the Bodhanagar Police Commission. Another citizen volunteer and a biker were seriously injured in the accident and their condition is said to be important.
According to the police, the accident occurred near Gate No. 2 of Eco Park at around 10:30 pm when Debnath, and a civilian volunteer, were patrolling the service road on their bicycle.
Police said, a fast four-wheeler entered the constable, which seriously injured him. Despite going to a nearby hospital, doctors declared him dead. Doctors said that he died due to excessive bleeding.
Sunil Rajbhar and a citizen volunteer named a motorcycle driver were also injured in an accident and are currently undergoing treatment. Two bicycles and a bike involved in the accident have been recovered. Police have closed the accident site.
After the collision, the vehicle fled from the scene. The police have launched a manhint and are investigating the CCTV footage from the area to track the driver of the killer vehicle.
Bidhanagar Police Commission Deputy Commissioner Police (New Town), Manav Singa said, “Constable bicycle was on patrol when a sharp vehicle hit him. We are reviewing all CCTV footage and every effort is being made to arrest the accused.”
The accident occurred outside a popular tourist place has expressed concern over careless driving in the city. Along with Durga Puja, around the corner, there is a tendency to driving the rash between the Revellers, especially those who go out late night for Pandal Hoping.
After Sunday’s accident, police said they would keep strict monitoring on the streets of the city to check for careless driving during Durga Puja days.
