Kolkata, September 20 (IANS) Archana Majumdar, a member of the National Commission for Women (NCW), visited the Panskura Super-Specialty Hospital in East Midnapur district of West Bengal on Saturday, where a contractual female employee was allegedly raped last Sunday, and alleged that the security measures and the surveillance were inadequate.
She met the superintendent, doctors and employees of the hospital to collect details of the alleged incidents.
Talking to media persons after his visit, Majumdar pointed to the gap in CCTV coverage.
“Hospital officials told me that there are 40 cameras and they have applied for more than 50. However, important and strategic areas have been left open. In the maternity ward, there are only two cameras and doctors are not in front of the toilet or outside the operation theater. Coverage is only insufficient.”
Later in a post on X, Majumdar said: “Dreaded revelations at Panskura Super Specialty Hospital! More than 40 women, including 2 rape victims, put before me today. A mother demanded justice for her daughter, sexually abused by the same accused in 2008.
He told that the NCW will continue to monitor the case closely. “Women working in hospitals should be preserved. Proper monitoring, accountability and safety measures are non-circumcision.”
On 14 September, a female medical staff at the Panskura Super-Specialty Hospital accused the convenience manager of raping her. The Prime accused, Zaheer Abbas Khan, was arrested by the police on the basis of a complaint filed by the female employee at Panskura police station.
Later, the convenience alleged that the accused used to call women in their room and sexually abuse them. The allegations first became public on Monday (September 15, 2025), after which the accused was arrested by the police 15 km from the hospital from Kolghat.
The mine was the head of the contractor company, for which the survivor worked. The victim also alleged that the accused had threatened to kill him when he told him. On Tuesday, the staff allegedly staged a massive protest at the hospital after ignoring the previous complaints to the Medical Superintendent.
Mazumdar further asked, “How was the accused, who was imprisoned for raping a minor 17 years ago and how the case was provoked? The person needs to influence and investigate how he has influenced and done a syndicate one after the other in the hospital. For this, the state government, health department and police administration are extremely surprised.”
On Friday, Eastern Midnapur District Health Department formed a five -member committee to investigate the rape incident.
A five -member committee, including three women officials of the Health Department, also included a female lawyer. Committee members visited the Panskura Super Specialty Hospital campus in this regard yesterday. Later, he also spoke to the superintendent of the hospital.
