Chennai, September 20 (IANS) Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitarman played an important role in maintaining and expanding the matchbox industry of Tamil Nadu on Saturday, describing her contribution as a very foundation for the success of the sector.
She was addressing the centenary celebrations of the industry in Kovilapatti, a hub that has become synonymous with the production of matches in India.
The Finance Minister said that the industry, which began on a minor scale, was nurtured and shaped by a large -scale female workers, whose flexibility turned it into a rich venture.
He said, “On this drought -stricken land, where lack of water keeps on facing challenges, women not only protected their families, but proudly carried forward this business. What started as a small venture developed in such a huge industry through their hard work.”
Turning to the development initiatives of the Center, FM Sitarman underlined that several projects have been brought in other parts of Tamil Nadu, regardless of BJP’s electoral representation. He said, “Prime Minister Narendra Modi considers Tamil Nadu an integral part of India and is making sure that projects are brought here to strengthen the development of the state,” he said.
She urged stakeholders in the Matchbox sector to prepare a comprehensive plan, describing how the industry can contribute to India’s ambition to become a developed nation by 2047. “The central government is ready for plans and support in the region, and I am fully committed to pursue it,” he assured.
Appreciating AIADMK MLA Kadambur Raju for his efforts to support the local industry, Sitarman also appealed to people to choose leaders in 2026 and 2029, who are deeply aware of “deeply aware of regional issues and committed to resolve them.”
During the event, Sitarman issued a memorial magazine marking 100 years of the Tamil Nadu matches industry, which was received by BJP state president Nanner Naganthran. He also harassed women laborers for his contribution.
BJP MLA Vanathi Srinivasan and National Small Machis Manufacturers Association President M. Parambavam was one of the distinguished persons present.
Centenary celebrations, with focus on respecting women’s labor, take a look at the history of the industry, but also has a vision for its place in India’s economic journey towards 2047.
