New Delhi, 19 September (IANS) BJP leader Dilip Ghosh criticized the state Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for allegedly failing to ensure student security and long -term suspension of the campus elections in the state.
Speaking to IANS, Ghosh said that the voice of students is unheard of Mamata Banerjee’s rule. “From colleges to schools, incidents are happening, and girls are being sexually harassed. Teachers and party (Trinumool Congress) members are included. As a result, sending children to schools or colleges has become a matter of great concern. Mamta government is silent, and the police is not doing FIR in this,” he said.
The state’s higher education institutions were criticized due to suspension of the students’ council elections. These elections have been suspended for more than six years, before the Kovid -19 epidemic started in 2020. Several student bodies, including Jadavpur University, have staged protests demanding to resume the Democratic Campus elections. No official timelines have been implemented so far.
The demand for elections recently achieved shocking pace in the case of Kasba Law College gang-Bal interview, where students and parents raised serious concerns about safety on campuses.
Dilip Ghosh intensified his criticism by pointing to the growing unrighteousness in the state. He said, “Mamta Banerjee’s MLAs are afraid of people. During Durga Puja, they go out abroad, where they have investment. So many incidents are happening, yet TMC leaders cannot be seen anywhere, even during the protests or public disturbance of teachers,” he said.
Meanwhile, in recent statements, Education Minister Bratiya Basu indicated that the process of the student council elections could begin after the upcoming festive season. His assurance came during a Trinamool Chhatra Parishad incident, which was amid increasing pressure from student groups.
Additionally, the West Bengal government is facing investigation after crimes related to several women, including the Kasba gang-rapp incident, where three accused were arrested. The National Commission for Women (NCW) took cognizance of the case, while opposition leaders intensified the call for justice and accountability.
