New Delhi, September 17 (IANS) Islamic Scholar and former Rajya Sabha member Maulana Mahmood Madani on Wednesday expressed dissatisfaction with recent debate and legislative changes about Waqf properties, questioning the government’s intentions, saying that the law remained “insufficient”.
In an interview to IANS, Madni said that while Parliament saw a detailed debate, the final decision was directed by the majority of the ruling BJP.
He said, “The earlier Waqf law already had flaws, and new amendments have made only easy to create problems. Some may feel that there is relief, but overall, I am not satisfied. The final decision of the court is also not decisive for me,” he said.
In Bihar elections, Madani removed Waqf issues from electoral politics. “Elections are different, and the matter is different,” he said.
However, he expressed concern over the allegations of “vote theft”, calling it a threat not only for minorities but also for all Indians.
He said, “This is a very serious issue. Whoever wins or loses, the decision should stay in the hands of the people,” he said.
When asked about Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s recent visit to Bhawan-e-Sharia, who supported him, Madni said: “Neither should he have gone there, nor should he support him. He is going to vote everywhere, so going there does not matter.”
On international affairs, Madani supported India’s firm Rukh against the American tariff and in favor of constant oil trade with Russia.
He said, “India should not compromise or bow down to its sovereignty before any major power.” “If we buy something from someone, then why should America otherwise tell us?”
Answering a question about Indian cricket captain Suryakumar Yadav, dedicating India’s victory over Pakistan to the victims of the Pahgam tragedy, Madni said that he was not interested in cricket.
He also rejected the praise of Pakistani cricketer Shahid Afridi for Rahul Gandhi, saying: “Rahul does not need his acceptance.”
If Rahul Gandhi becomes Prime Minister, Muslims will feel safe that Madani said: “Who knows what will happen? We will see when the time will come.”
Regarding Samajwadi Party veteran Azam Khan, he remarked: “I don’t know – only Azam Khan can say whether he has been abandoned or supported by SP.”
