In a concrete effort to curb the illegal trade of frozen meat and meat products, the Food Security Team led by Assistant Commissioner, Food Security Anantnag recovered about 400 kg of unintended frozen meat from various food trade operators in the district.
Out of these 400 kg, 250 kg was considered disqualified for human consumption and was destroyed on the spot with the help of concerned municipal committees. The remaining 150 kg was seized for further investigation.
The unspecified frozen meat was recovered during broader raids conducted on the outskirts of the district, including Verinag, Cokeranag and Kajigund. Inspections focus on high -risk installations, especially engaged in processing and storage of meat and meat products.
As part of a targeted re-inspection of high-risk installations, the team identified frequent violations by the M/S Khanday Poultry, the Renal, which was found to be earlier storing the unwarded frozen food. According to legal procedures, the premises were sealed to prevent any further violations.
In a parallel enforcement drive, the food security team also took action against the illegal use of synthetic food colors in street food. About 100 kg of colorful snacks were destroyed during inspection. The vendors involved were made sensitive about the serious health hazards generated by such prohibited additives and strict warnings under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
The department confirmed its zero tolerance policy towards violations that endangered public health and said that the district would continue to be uninterrupted according to the provisions of the monitoring and enforcement operation law.
