The beach and swimming region in the Christie Lake Conservation Zone has been closed for swimmers and animals, the Hamilton Conservation Authority said in a news release on Friday.
Water samples taken from several places along the coastline showed the presence of blue-green algae, confirming the Hamilton public health services.
Naturally occurring algae, known as cyanobacteria, can produce toxins known as microcystin, which is a health risk for humans and animals. It is usually formed in shallow, warm and stable or slow moving water.
Skin exposure or accidental ingestion with algae can cause many symptoms that include rash or other skin irritation, red eyes, swollen lips, sore throat, fever, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.
The Hamilton Protection Authority says the most serious of these is due to drinking contaminated water.
At this time a time -term has not been provided to reopen.
