After its extraordinary victory at the National Bank Open at Toronto-Montreal, 18-year-old tennis sensation Victoria Mboko is being observed as a role model for the next generation Canadian athletes.
Burlington, Phem of ONTS defeated four-time Grand Slam winner Naomi Osaka 2-6, 6-4, 6–1 in the final match and took the National Bank Open title on Thursday.
Yosbeth Egofer of Group Black Girls in Alberta in tennis says that Maboco’s victory over Canadian soil is the route for more representation of black Canadian women in tennis.
She says many colored girls appear to athletes like Serena and Venus Williams and Coco Goff, and it is inspiring to see a black Canadian player succeeding on the world stage.
One of the coaches of MBCo during his training days at Daug Burke and Burlington, president of Ace Tennis, says it is possible to achieve success heights that he is showing small Canadians of “any color or upbringing”.
He says that it was “heavy” to “give a very excellent” performance to the Rising Star in the tournament.
