A northeast Ontario region that saw its first measles infection in this summer, is now reporting dozens of new cases.
Public Health Ontario is reporting 40 new cases in the public health unit of Sudbari region, including Chapleu and Manitolin Islands.
It is responsible for most of the 54 new cases of the province for the week of 22 to 29 July, and brings the total number to 2,352 since the onset of an outbreak in October.
On 22 July, the Sudbari Public Health Unit reported its first case of measles in an infant since 2014, which was vaccinated against a very infectious disease.
Last Friday, the Public Health Unit stated that its investigation in that first case revealed that measles was actually introduced into the area seven weeks ago and infected a group of 39 people.
The already undesken cluster of measles cases was linked to several private ceremonies, and led the exposure to public places.
Health officials say that most of the last week’s infections have solved.
Acting Medical Officer of the field of health, Dr. M. Mustafa Hirji said in a statement last week that local matters are mainly in individuals.
