Canada-American Trade Minister Dominic Labbank says he is feeling “encouraged” after meeting with Hoved Lootnik and US MPs in Washington, DC before the next week’s tariff deadline.
US President Donald Trump threatened to slap Canada with a 35 percent tariff, if there is no deal till August 1, but the White House said that it would not include compliance with goods with the Canada-US-Maxico agreement on trade.
Canada is also being hit with Trump’s tariff on steel, aluminum and automobiles, and will be impressed by copper tariffs that are expected to kick on 1 August.
Labwank says that Ottawa can take the necessary time to get the best deal in the interest of Canadian people, showing that a new economic and security system may not be physical from Trump’s deadline.
Labwank says he will return to Washington next week for additional meetings.
Alaska Sen Lisa Murkowski says that he is hopeful of returning to general relations with Canada, but does not understand that there would be a deal before Trump’s deadline.
