A new assistant and affordable housing project in Brampton is ready to break the ground, and the non-profit person behind it is reaching the public to invest in his community.
Services and housing (ships) in the province are a non-profit organization that provides rapraound assistant housing services and deeply affordable housing for people with mental health and addiction challenges.
“There is a lot of need in the community. I think everyone knows about the housing crisis, and we are doing our share with the part of those who may have trouble finding and keeping housing.”
Jeffrey Cinclair is a ship customer who lives in one of his auxiliary housing buildings. He says that it has supported him what he needs to flourish.
“My life was really ups and down,” he explained. “While living on my own without any support, I am just going out and out of the hospital, which I could not just manage on my own. But being in a feature where support is supported, you just have that rest and the foundation where you can really stand on your own.”
Kerr says that it is about dignity and gives people a chance to get well and live for their full potential.
“It is, not to be clear, not a donation. It is an investment.
The ship currently owns 11 buildings and manages 1,200 such units. His latest acquisition is a large plot on the main street in Brampton which will be redeveloped in 52 units.
“We are at the stages of pre-development. We are offering a ship community bond program. We are trying to raise $ 4 million,” Kerr says that investment and more supportive housing construction is widespread beneficial implications for the provincial healthcare system.
“It is proven to reduce the stress on the auxiliary housing and the health system really in the health system. Therefore, paying for an auxiliary housing unit is very less expensive than the hospitalization or emergency room tour, or even the shelter system. So when you are able to invest in auxiliary housing, the per bed is reduced per bed.
The ship is accepting investment until they reach their target of $ 4 million, and the latest project is expected to be completed in 2027.
