An off-duty Fire fighter Who was traveling behind Summerset School Coach When this Flipped and 20 feet gap has been dropped Praised for taking steps to save the lives of children.
Pupils of the Minhead Middle School, at the age of nine and ten, were on 70-seater coaches, when it crashed at A936 near Whadan Cross on Thursday afternoon.
One child died at the scene, while 21 others were injured. Two children were taken to the hospital with serious injuries.
During a press conference yesterday evening, it was revealed that an off-duty fire fighter traveling behind the coach was able to free the passengers immediately.
Gavin Ellis of Devon and Summerset Fire and Rescue Service praised the fire fighter and said: “I am also grateful to the off-duty fire fighter who was traveling behind the coach at the point of the accident that was able to release the casualties from the bus.”
He said: “We had gathered for a big incident of a coach which was overturned on its roof and slipped about 20 feet below the embankment.”
He said, “Our crew in extremely difficult circumstances made many outsider and defended, and they also supported our ambulance colleagues with casualties treatment.”
“This was a very complex and technically difficult event to deal with our employees, and I am grateful to the untiring efforts and tasks of the crew that they could do everything they could do for those who were trapped and securely safely.”
A resident, who lives near the site of a school coach crashed near Khan of Somerset, has described the incident as frightening.
The person, who did not take the name, said: “The coach has gone down from the slope. It is very standing around here and it is a big coach.
“There are no obstacles with anything or anything.
“We are using it, you don’t even notice it.
“I can’t believe that this happened with great honesty, this is the biggest thing that I know to go to the slope.
“It’s frightening, and I am very sorry for all those children of that coach.”
Speaking outside the Brijwatter Police Center, Chief Superintendent Mark Edington said: “Many others have introduced in the hospital or have been taken with some serious injuries.
“It includes two children, who were rushed to the hospital by an air ambulance, many passengers either suffered minor injuries or were physically untoward and were transferred to a rest center.
“Work is being done throughout the evening to help them work. The cause of this incident will be investigated.”
