Tikok CEO asked to hold a meeting with Industry Minister on a shutdown order

Web Desk, 14/07/202514/07/2025

Ottawa – Tiktok’s CEO Industry Minister Mélanie Joly is asking for an immediate meeting about the order of the federal government, directing the company to shut down its Canadian operations.

According to a letter received by Canadian Press, Shoo Chu wrote Jolie on July 2 for a person’s meeting within two weeks.

Cheva argued that the order was made under different circumstances, when it seemed that the United States was going to ban Tiktok.

The letter states, “There is no reverse for this old and reverse government order, which was issued in a separate government and a different era, and which does not reflect today’s reality,” says the letter.

In November, Ottawa ordered the disintegration of the Canadian business of Tikok, after the National Security Review of the Chinese Company, Bidence Limited behind the social media platform.

While Tikokok has been asked to reduce its Canadian operation, the app will be available to Canadian people.

Cheva argued that Canada would include an outdoor country among its colleagues by proceeding with the November instructions, including other countries that are part of the five-eye intelligence-sharing alliance.

He said that this order is “based on perceptions about the future of Tiktok in the United States which is no longer true.”

Canada launched its National Security Review in the fall of 2023, but did not disclose it until March 2024, when the US House of Representatives passed a bill to ban Tikok, if Bidens did not divide its stake.

But in June, US President Donald Trump extended the deadline for the third time to ban Tiktok in the US.

In the July 2 letter, Chu said that without Jolie’s intervention, the company would soon have to set fire to more than 350 employees in Canada, stop their direct investment in Canada and cut in support for Canadian creators and culture.

“The wind-up process is rapidly getting closer to a significant turn,” he wrote.

On July 7, Tikok said that it comes out as sponsors of many Canadian art institutions, including the Juno Awards and Toronto International Film Festival.

A spokesperson of Jolie did not answer questions about whether the minister has responded to the letter or plans to meet with Chu.

Tikok is challenging the shutdown order in the federal court. It launched a legal challenge in December, in which the government argued that “measures that do not have any rational relations for national security risks that recognize it.”

Ottawa’s National Security Review was invested through the Canada Act, which allows the government to investigate any foreign investment with the ability to harm national security.

When he was the Industry Minister, François-Filip Champagne said the government was taking action to address “specific national security risks”. He did not specify what those risks are.

Privacy and security concerns about tiktok and bidence have focused on Chinese national security laws that forces organizations in the country to assist with intelligence.

Chev said that no evidence has been presented to show that Tiktok is a security threat to Canada and the government is not interested in discussing solutions.

He said that the government’s concerns increased data security protocol and additional transparency and measures such as measures can be addressed.

The shutdown order will leave the ticket available to its 14 million users in Canada, Chu said in the letter.

But the company “will no longer be attended or representative under the jurisdiction of Canada,” he said.

He said that the company’s Canadian employees have appeared in parliamentary committees, are engaged with regulators, Canadian law enforcement has been trained as to how to submit valid access requests and worked with Canada during the federal election.

“Tickek maintains an appearance in Canada means that there is a local team that is accountable to Canadian policy-makers and officials,” he wrote.
