Hall of old neolithic farming from Stonehenge discovered under school

An early newly founded Timber Hall has been found under a school Scotlandwith Archaeologist Assuming that it could be a formal site for the first agricultural communities of Scotland.

The remains of the “internationally important” hall, old, were found below, what two schools would become for football pitches. Carnosti High school in Angus.

The site, which was first discovered in 2017, is being investigated by the Guard Archaeological. It is considered the largest hall found in Scotland.

The archaeological group stated that the discovery of the hall and a small fellow building was “extraordinary” and included artifacts around Scotland, including arran and highlands, as well as hazelnut shells and holy grains.

The artifacts discovered had a gold -decorated Celtic Spearhead and a sword, as well as a very well preserved bronze age wood and leather scabrades. It is believed that it is best preserved in Britain.

A report by the guard archeology suggested that the possibility of the hall attracts farmers from a wide area for feasts and ceremonies. It was especially rare to have two buildings simultaneously.

Elon Hunter Blair, who directed the fieldwork, said: “Cornosti excavation produced extraordinary results, the largest initial neolithic timber hall marks discovered in Scotland, dating close to 4,000 B.C.

“It was a permanent structure 35 meters long and 9 meters wide, built of oak with the opposing gate near one end of the building. Its large roof was supported by large -scale wooden positions.”

The report co-writer Beverly Balin Smith said: “This monumental wood hall, which is completely foreigner to the culture and landscape of the east Mesolithic era, was built by one of the first groups of farmers to collect Scotland in a clearing within the remains of natural Woodland.

“It was fully formed, architecturally sophisticated, large, complex and essential skills of design, plan, execution and carpentry.”

The archaeological group stated that the short hall was 20 meters long and more than eight meters wide.

Belin Smith said: “Carnocti hall, elevated in landscape and probably close to Rootway, where people may have been collected naturally in different seasons of the year.

“Availability of hazelnuts in autumn is a strong indicator that it was an important season to receive, feast and celebrate.

“Cornostitute can be a focal point, [the halls’] Adequate importance to attract people from very broad area.

“Some artifacts come from distant places and deliberately represent the statement, such as a piece of arran pitchstone, an ax of the garnet-albit-Xry and a piece of smokey quartz from the highlands.

“Other materials were found locally, such as Agat, Quartz and Cheldoni.”

Catherine Lindsay, Chief Executive Officer of Angus Council said: “When [we] Approval of the development of two outdoor football pitches at Balmachi Road, no one imagined that this process would reveal one of the most internationally important archaeological discoveries in Scotland. ,

The council funded the archaeological work, which was required as a condition of the plan consent.
