PM Modi reached Calgary to attend 51st G7 Summit in Alberta

Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached Calgary on Tuesday, marking a significant moment in India-Canada after a phase of stressful diplomatic relations to attend the 51st G7 Summit in Kannskis, Alberta.

PM Modi’s visit to Canada in Canada comes after a period of friction between New Delhi and Ottawa, which begins with Canadian allegations that the Indian agent was involved in the murder of NIA -nominated terrorist Hardip Singh Nijar, nominated by the NIA outside a gurdwara in Canada in 2023.

At the conclusion of the visit, Mea Secretary (West) Tanmay Lal made a detailed remarks, stating that it was PM Modi’s first visit to Cyprus and for the first time by any Indian Prime Minister in two decades.

“This historic journey highlights permanent friendship and reliable partnership between our two countries,” said Lal.

In his media address, Prime Minister Modi underlined the strategic dimension of India-sprus relations. He said, “Our partnership also gives importance to the India-European Union Strategic partnership and India’s growing engagement with the Mediterranean region,” he said.

The chairman of Cyprus Nicos Christodaulides honored the Grand Cross of Makros III’s order on PM Modi- Cyprus the highest honor given by Cyprus to foreign heads of the government.

During the talks, the leaders discussed business and investment, defense cooperation, fintech, maritime shipping, IMEC connectivity initiative, mobility and exchange of people with people.

Lal said that the discussion was against the background of important global challenges. Prime Minister Modi appreciated Cyprus’s strong support in India’s fight against cross-border terrorism. To receive the chairmanship of the European Union Council in the first half of next year with Cyprus, the two leaders reviewed the strategic partnership of the India-European Union, including the ongoing India-European Union FTA talks.

Recalling the deep historical roots of bilateral relations, Lal said, “In the 1950s, India advocated the freedom of Cyprus. Later, the two countries worked together in the non-composed movement and Commonwealth.” Both nations have continuously supported each other on the United Nations and other multilateral platforms.

“Cyprus supports India for permanent membership in a improved and extended United Nations Security Council, and India supports Cyprus on Cyprus issue,” he said.
After the terrorist attack in Pahalgam, India’s Foreign Minister and Cyprus’s Foreign Minister remain in close communication.

Highlighting the geographical significance of Cyprus, Lal said, “With its strategic location, Cyprus can act as the entrance to Europe and the Mediterranean Sea.”

“In short, Prime Minister Modi’s historic visit to Cyprus has provided a strategic direction for stimulation and partnership as important and reliable partners between our two countries,” Lal concluded.

The G7 Summit, which PM Modi is ready to participate on 16–17 June, is an annual meeting of leaders of the United States, United Kingdom, France, Germany, Japan, Italy, Canada and European Union (EU). This marks PM Modi’s sixth consecutive partnership at the G7 Summit. (AI)
