According to the Meteorological Department of India (IMD), the South -West monsoon hit Kerala on Saturday, marking its arrival on the Indian mainland since 2009.

According to IMD, the south-west monsoon has moved forward in the remaining parts of the South-Arab Sea, the west-central and east-middle Arabian Sea, the entire Lakshadweep region and parts of Kerala.

According to the Met Department, the monsoon has also moved forward in Maharashtra, parts of Karnataka, the remaining parts of the Maldives and Komorin region, several parts of Tamil Nadu, the southwest of Bengal and the remaining parts of the East-Sentral Gulf, the remaining parts of the Bay, West-Sentral and parts of the parts of Bengal.

In a social media post on X, the Meteorological Department said, “Depression on the Dakshin Konkan coast moved almost east with a speed of 18 km per hour during the last 6 hours, crossed the South Konkan coast near Ratnagiri between 1130 am and 1230 pm and was centered between 1730 pm for today. 100 km east from Ratnagiri (Maharashtra) and 140 km from Satara (Maharashtra).

The post said, “South Central Maharashtra, Marathwada and northern internal Karnataka are likely to move almost east and gradually weaken into a well-marked low pressure area during the next 12 hours,” the post said.

The Meteorological Department of India (IMD) has also issued red and orange alerts for several districts in Kerala in the next three days, warning of heavy rainfall.

Today, a red alert was declared for Kasaragod and Kannur districts. An orange warning is in place for Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Irnakulam, Idukki, Tharisur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode and Wayanad.

Meanwhile, the 30-member team of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) reached Ooty in Tamil Nadu as the Red Alert for the rain has been released to the Nilgiris district.
