Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir People’s Democratic Party (JKPDP) President Mehboba Mufti and former Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir today issued a serious statement addressing the rapidly growing tension between India and Pakistan. Expressing deep concern over the deteriorating security situation in the region, he highlighted the heavy toll being paid by the citizens, especially in Jammu and Kashmir.
The statement came in view of the Pahalgam terror attack on 22 April 2025, which claimed 26 innocent life, and later launched by Indian military operations, Operation Sindor on 7 May. Mufti condemned the violence and emphasized the immediate need for diplomatic intervention to avoid further bloodshed.
“The people of our region have long taken the brunt of such conflicts,” he said. “India, as the world’s largest democracy and a growing global power, should lead stressful tension.”
Mufti also mentioned international development, including recent comments by US vice -president JD Vance and diplomatic outreach for Pakistan’s military leadership by state secretary Marco Rubio, indicating growing global concern. Drawing India’s global stature, Mufti argued that the country should rely on inconsistent international alliances but to rely on its principles of peace and democratic strength.
“India will have to show that its real power is not in its nuclear arsenal but in its commitment to peace and dialogue,” he said.
Highlighting the human cost of conflict, Mufti recently talked emotionally about the tragedies, including the death of Additional Deputy Commissioner Raj Kumar Thappa in Rajouri due to cross-golibari. He described the growing climate of fear in the Kashmir Valley, marked with arbitrary detention and harsh cracks after the April 22 attack.
“Venus only ends the cycle of violence,” he warned. “True leadership is shown by those who break this cycle.”
For immediate diplomatic engagement, Mufti urged the Government of India to take the first step towards peace and encouraged Pakistan to show a clear commitment to address terrorism.
He confirmed the long -standing commitment to JKPDP’s “peace with dignity” and repeated his vision of Jammu and Kashmir as a bridge between India and Pakistan, not in the battlefield.
“Let it be a significant turn. Not more conflict, but towards a future where our children can live without the shadow of war.” He said.
