“India-Iran Cooperation has moved forward in many aspects in recent years”: Jaishankar

Web Desk, 08/05/2025

Praising bilateral relations between India and Iran, Foreign Minister S Jaishankar said that cooperation between the two countries has moved forward in many aspects in recent years.

In his initial remarks at a meeting of the 20th India-Iran Joint Joint Commission in Delhi on Thursday, Jaishankar welcomed Iran’s Foreign Minister Sed Abbas Argchi in India. He recalled the meeting held between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Iranian President Masaud Peseshkian in 2024.

Jaishankar said, “It is a great pleasure for today to welcome you and your delegation in India and co-chairman, 20th India-Iran Joint Commission meeting today. In recent years, our cooperation has made many aspects progress. There are also situations that we need to address.

The minister said, “He has also had a phone conversation on 26 April. His Majesty, this is the 75th anniversary of our diplomatic relations. It reminds us of our closeness of cooperative cooperation and the deep friendship between us. I am sure we will marry the anniversary properly.”

He also spoke about the ‘Operation Sindoor’ in response to the Pahgam terror attack by the Indian Armed Forces and Pakistan -occupied Jammu and Kashmir (Pojk) in Pakistan, which was “measured and targeted by India’s response.” Jaishankar said that if India faces military attack, India will give a “firm response”.

Jaishankar said, “His Majesty, you are visiting India at a time when we are responding to a particularly barbaric terror attack on 22 April in the Indian Union region of Jammu and Kashmir.

“Our response was targeted and measured. We do not intend to enhance the situation. However, if we are military attacks, there should be no doubt that it will be fulfilled with a very strong response. As a neighbor and a close partner, it is important that you have a good understanding of the situation,” he said.

The Indian armed forces targeted the terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pojk under ‘Operation Sindoor’ on Wednesday in response to the Pahgam terror attack on 22 April.

Strike, held between 1:05 pm and 1:30 pm on Wednesday, was a coordinated attempt by the Indian Army, Navy and Air Force, targeting nine terrorist camps in Pakistan on the basis of reliable intelligence.

During the meeting of the Indo-Iran Joint Commission, Cayid Abbas Araghchi emphasized the “hot and friendly relations” shared by India and Iran.

Argchi said, “Okay, on our bilateral relationships, only one thing to say to me is that what Majesty has said is. Iran-India relations go back to history. We have always enjoyed very friendly and warm relations between the two countries on the basis of mutual respect and mutual interest and have continued for years and we still have very good friends.”

He said, “Our financial support is good, but not as good as we expect, as you know, which we hope we hope that we can overcome that problem in the future,” he said.

Earlier in the day, Iran’s Foreign Ministry Easmail Bakai said that Araghchi is to review bilateral relations between the two countries in India and to discuss regional and international development. He said that India and Iran should work together to strengthen peace, security and stability in the regions and beyond that.

In a post on X, Bakaii said, “Today FM Argchi is in New Delhi, India, Iran-India for an official visit to review bilateral relations and to consult on regional and inter-interior development. FM Argchi and his Indian counterpart @drsjaishankar made the 20th Iran-Iyan Castworion, which co-headed the Iran-Iyon Castworks, which was co-headed by the bats. Customs and sign have been signed in.

He said, “Iran-India is deeply vested in the history of friendship and provides a solid ground for mutually beneficial relations. We should work together to strengthen peace, security and stability in areas and beyond,” he said.

Iran’s Foreign Minister Araghchi arrived in New Delhi on Thursday to co-chair the 20th India-Iran Joint Commission meeting. Foreign Ministry (Mea) official spokesperson Randhir Jaywal welcomed the visiting downstream and highlighted the importance of the journey.

In a post on X, Jaiswal said, “FM warmly welcomed for Abbas Aragchi, as it comes to New Delhi for the India-Iran Joint Commission meeting. The opportunity to review and increase bilateral cooperation on the 75th anniversary of the Indo-Iran Friendship Treaty.” (AI)
