Amidst Israel-Hamas War, Ghazan resorts to turtle meat in hunting for food

Arun Jain, 19/04/2025

Khan yunis:

Some desperate families have turned to eating sea turtles as a rare source of protein, with rare of food in the surrounded and war-elastic gaza strip.

Once the shell is removed, the meat is cut, boiled and cooked in a mixture of onions, pepper, tomatoes and spices.

Majida law said, “Children were afraid of turtles, and we told them that it is delicious as delicious,” Majida law said, keeping an eye on a piece of red meat in a vessel on a wooden fire.

“Some of them ate it, but others refused.”

For a lack of a better option, this is the third time when the 61-year-old law has prepared a turtle-based meal for his family, which were displaced and now live in a tent in Khan Younis, the largest city of Southern Gaza.

The United Nations has warned of a serious human status for 2.4 million inhabitants of the Palestinian region since March 2, after 2 March, after 18 months of the disastrous war and an Israeli blockade.

Israel has accused Hamas of assistance, which has been denied by the Palestinian Group.

The heads of the 12 major aid organizations warned on Thursday that “the famine is not just a risk, but possibly rapidly revealing in almost all parts of the region.

“There are no open crossings and there is nothing in the market,” the law said.

“When I buy two small bags (of vegetables) for 80 shekels ($ 22), there is no meat,” he said.

Sea turtles are preserved internationally as an endangered species, but those caught in a mesh of Gaza fishermen are used for food.

– ‘Never expected to eat turtles’ –

Fisherman Abdel Haleem law said, “We had never expected to eat turtles.”

“When the war began, there was a lack of food. There is no food. So (turtle meat) is an option for other sources of protein. There are no meat, chicken or vegetables.”

The United Nations Office has warned that Gaza has been facing its most serious humanitarian crisis since the war began on October 7, 2023, which began with Hamas attack on Israel since the war began on 7 October 2023.

Since then, there has been a fight in Gaza, stopping only twice during the two-month ceasefire between 19 January and 17, and in the last one week’s stop in late November 2023.

The regional head of the World Health Organization, Hanan Balki, said in June that some ghazans were so desperate that they were drinking animal food, grass and sewage water.

Hamas on Thursday accused Israel of using “Starring as a weapon” against Ghazan by blocking support supply.

Fisherman law said that turtles were killed in the “halal” method according to Islamic rites.

“If there is no famine, we will not eat it and leave it, but we want to compensate for protein deficiency,” he said.
