“Terrible, it’s a shame”: Trump on the shooting of Florida University

Arun Jain, 18/04/2025

US President Donald Trump said on Thursday that the collective shooting at Florida State University (FSU) was “terrible”, but was firm in defense of gun rights and other amendments.

A 20 -year -old FSU student Phoenix Ekner killed at least two people and six others were injured, who were set on fire near the Campus Student Union on Thursday afternoon. Ikner, who was shot by the police and is currently in custody in a hospital, is in a stable position. The motive behind the shooting is still under investigation.

Speaking to reporters at the Oval office, Trump said, “These things are terrible. But the gun does not shoot, people do – a phrase that is probably used very often,” he said.

He said, “It’s a matter of shame. I am listening to it right now. I know this area well, I know the school very well, it is Florida.”

Reporter: There are 2 deceased after that shooting at Florida State University. Is there any change that you want to see in gun law?

Trump: See, I am a big lawyer of second amendment … These things are terrible but do not shoot guns, people do pic.twitter.com/8gdskehwih

Officials confirmed that Ikner used a handgun Related to her mother, Jessica Ikner, an experienced deputy with Leon County Sheriff Office. He retained the gun after the department upgraded its service weapons. The IKner was also found to carry a gun, although it is not clear whether it was used during the attack or not.

Asked if the tragedy can consider them any change in the current gun laws, Trump said, “I am a big lawyer of another amendment, I have been since the beginning,” he said. “I protected it.”

The second amendment to the Constitution of the United States is part of the rights bill, and it protects the personal right to keep and tolerate weapons.

Trump said that he does not plan to insist for any legislative change in response to FSU shooting. Trump said, “It has been going on for a long time. It is the responsibility of protecting my second amendment, I ran to the second amendment among many other things, and I will always protect the second amendment.”

He said that he would be more to say “later”, but only in terms of “what happened.”

A political science head and a registered Republican, Phoenix Ikner had earlier commented on one Campus protest against President Donald TrumpInauguration in January. In a stored interview with the FSU student newspaper, he commented on the protest, saying, “These people are usually very entertaining, usually not for good reasons. I think it’s a little late, that is, that’s it [Trump] Already being inaugurated on 20 January and is not really much anything until you can do a lump sum rebellion, and I don’t think anyone wants to do so. ,

After shooting, News paper Removed the quotation of IKner from the article, saying that he did not desire to extend “the voice of the person responsible for violence”.

The university has canceled classes and events through Friday, and safety measures have increased as the investigation continues.
