The project leader on Tuesday told AFP that the finish researchers are working on a device to combat the jamming of satellite positioning systems, which have spread to the country.
Finland has seen an increase in suspected jammings of global navigation satellite system (GNSS) services like GPS or Galileo since 2022, which affected aviation and marine traffic.
The intervention from Russia has also disrupted the satellite imagery used by Finland’s military, border guard service and its forestry sector.
Mika Sajsto, a senior research scientist at the National Land Survey Authority, said that being inspired by an “immediate requirement” to deal with the efforts, about both safety and economic risks, Finnish researchers said, began to reduce a device to identify and reduce a tool in April.
“We will develop the suitable algorithm solutions for our terms that can identify intervention and warn the last user that there is something in the air that is not there,” Sajsto said, which is leading the project.
According to Finnish Transport and Communications Agency Trafficom, about 2,000 reports of satellite positioning intervention were filed in Finland last year compared to just 239 reports in 2023.
The country shares a border of 1,340 km (830-mile) with Russia and has been increasing its defense and border security since the 2022 invasion of Moscow’s Ukraine.
The project funded by the European Union will run in a two -year period in North Karelia, which is an area in Eastern Finland, where satellite status data has been intervened especially often.
“Some aircraft are not able to land in Eastern Finland,” Sajsto said.
