Bangladeshi model and former Miss Earth Bangladesh winner, Meghna Alam has been detained under the Special Powers Act for allegedly threatening diplomatic relations of the country. According to police, Ms. Alam was arrested for spreading false information about a “important person”, especially with the intention of harmful relations between Saudi Arabia, countries. Prior to her arrest, the model posted several Facebook updates, alleging that a foreign diplomatic law was trying to silence her with the help of enforcement agencies, AFP Informed
On 9 April, he was detained by the police when a Facebook Livestream showed individuals to the individuals claiming to be law enforcement in his house in Dhaka. During the 12-Mint video, Ms. Alam requested the authorities, assuring her that she would cooperate. He was later taken into custody and sent to Kashimpur Jail after the Dhaka court ordered a 30 -day custody.
Ms. Alam’s custody has expressed concern, many people have questioned the circumstances around her arrest. Model’s father, Badul Alam, said that his arrest followed a relationship with the then Saudi Ambassador in Dhaka. He said, “Ambassador and Meghna were in a relationship, and my daughter denied their marriage proposal as they already have a wife and children,” he said.
In particular, Saudi Arabia plays an important role in supporting Bangladesh, which provides adequate financial and humanitarian aid. Additionally, it hosts a large workforce of Bangladeshi citizens, with 2.16 million workers, they have the largest nationality in Saudi Arabia according to the 2022 Saudi census.
Amnesty International has also expressed concern over the arrest and issued a statement. “We ask the authorities either to charge Meghna with an internationally recognizable crime or leave it,” Amnesty International Written on x.
