Earthquake of magnitude 5.8 hits felt in Pakistan, Jammu and Kashmir

Arun Jain, 12/04/2025

Srinagar:

An earthquake measuring 5.8 on the Richter scale occurred with a sub -station in Pakistan on Saturday, while its shock was felt in J&K.

Met Department Director Mukhtar Ahmed told IANS that a earthquake measuring 5.8 on the Richter scale occurred on Saturday at 13:00:55 IST latitude 33.63 degrees north and longitude 72.46 degrees east.

He said, “Earthquake was in the Pakistan region. The earthquake took place 10 km inside the earth’s crust. Light shocks were also felt in J&K,” he said.

Earthquricted, the Kashmir Valley is located in the earthquake-prone region, where earthquakes occur in the past.

On October 8, 2005, an earthquake measuring an earthquake in 7.6 on the Richter scale occurred at 8.50 am with an epicenter in Muzaffarabad in Pakistan -occupied Kashmir (POK).

More than 80,000 people were killed in the earthquake on both sides of the Line of Control (LOC).

The 2005 earthquake was also felt in Afghanistan, Tajikistan, India and Shinjiang region.

The severity of damage caused by the earthquake is attributed to seriously instigating. Although not the biggest earthquake to hit the region in terms of magnitude, the 2005 earthquake is considered to be the deadliest, crossing the 1935 quetta earthquake.

It was the fifth-fifth natural disaster of the decade. Sources indicate that the official death count in the earthquake in Pakistan was between 73,276 and 87,350, some estimates were more than 100,000.

In India, 1,360 people were killed, while 6,266 people were injured, and four others died in Afghanistan.

In the 2005 earthquake, three and a half people were released without shelter, and around 138,000 people were injured.

The Chenab Valley region of Jammu and Kashmir is also looking at periodic shock during the last ten years.

In some of those incidents, many private and government buildings developed cracks and became uninhabited in the installment and Doda districts.

Experts have advised people to ensure that earthquake -friendly structures are constructed in the Kashmir Valley and Chenab Valley region to reduce damage during the future earthquakes.

Traditional wood and mud structures manufactured in the valley in the past will cause minimal damage due to earthquake in the past.

Since cement concrete structures changed traditional wood and mud structures, the vulnerability of such structures for earthquakes has increased manifold.
