University to become meaningless? AI’s Godfather bold prediction

Jeffri Hinton, who is considered by many as ‘Godfather of Artificial Intelligence’ (AI), has predicted that AI progresses may not be “good news for universities”. Mr. Hinton, who was widespread about the rise of technology, said that these AI tutors would be able to provide adaptable text to individuals by assessing their weak points, something that was unable to do traditional teachers.

Mr. Hinton, who was awarded the 2024 Nobel Prize in Physics with John Hopfield, said that the AI systems were developing quickly and could take the mantras of teachers in the coming decade.

“AI systems are not yet, but some time in the next 10 years, perhaps they would be really good,” he said in one Interview,

“When a child is learning something, the AI system will really be able to see that this child is misunderstood because the AI system has seen one lakh other children. So if a private tutor that a person is twice as better, it would be three or four times better,” he said.

“This may not be good news for universities, but it’s very good news for people learning goods.”

If this means the end of universities, Mr. Hinton remarked: “Maybe we will not need them.”

However, he said that individuals may still need institutions for research and training.

Warning about AI

Mr. Hinton laid the foundation for machine learning which is giving strength to today’s AI-based products and applications. However, the Nobel Prize winner cautioned AI’s future development and cut relations with his former employer Google to speak more independently on the issue.

At that time Mr. Hinton said, “This will be comparable with the industrial revolution. But instead of crossing people in physical strength, it is going to cross people in intellectual ability. We have no experience that it likes to make us smarter for us.”

“I am worried that its overall result system can be more intelligent than us that eventually takes control.”
