Prime Minister Narendra Modi was given a formal welcome to the freedom class of Colombo on Friday as he started a three -day visit to Sri Lanka with the aim of deepening regional relations and development cooperation.
Sri Lankan President Anuraa Kumara Dissanayake marked the beginning of a packed diplomatic schedule and congratulated him at the venue.
Earlier in the day, PM Modi was warmly welcomed at his hotel, where he was seen shaking hands with members of the Indian migrants and a puppet show in his honor. The vibrant reception reflected strong cultural and people’s relations with people.
PM Modi’s arrival in Colombo came after his visit to Thailand, where he held a bilateral meeting with Thai Prime Minister Patongtern Shinavatra and attended the Bimtec Summit. On the shore, he was further engaged in bilateral discussions, doing ground work for this leg of his regional outreach.
Despite the rainy season, six senior ministers of Sri Lanka personally received PM Modi at the airport. The delegation included Minister of Foreign Affairs, foreign jobs and tourism Vijita Herrath; Health and Mass Media Minister Nalinda Jayatisa; Labor Minister Anil Jayant; Fisheries Minister Ramalingam Chandrashekhar; Women and Child Affairs Minister Saroja Savithri Paulraj; And Science and Technology Minister Chrishantha Abieysena.
PM Modi said in a post on X, “landed in Colombo.
During his stay, PM Modi will visit Anuradhapura to inaugurate the development projects funded by India. He will review progress under the joint vision of “promoting participation for a shared future” in a discussion with President Dissanayake.
Earlier, Vyas Kalyanasundaram of Swami Vivekananda Cultural Center praised PM Modi’s global advocacy for yoga, given that his efforts had given it a formal recognition and expanded their acceptance in Sri Lanka-from spiritual circles to mainstream welfare and corporate space.
