Flights diverted to Iranian airspace after airport explosion: report

Washington:

ABC News quoted a U.S. official late Thursday as saying that Israeli missiles struck a site in Iran, days after Iran launched drone strikes against Israel in response to an attack on the Iranian embassy in Syria.

Iran’s Fars News Agency said that an explosion was heard at an airport in Isafhan, Iran, but the cause is currently unclear. Several of Iran’s nuclear facilities are located in Isfahan province, including the Natanz nuclear facility at the heart of Iran’s uranium enrichment program.

Several flights were diverted through Iranian airspace, CNN reported.

Over the weekend, Iran launched hundreds of drones and missiles in retaliatory strikes after a suspected Israeli attack on its embassy compound in Syria.

Most drones and missiles are shot down before reaching Israeli territory.

Iran told the U.N. Security Council on Thursday that “Israel must be forced to cease any further military adventurism that harms our interests,” as the U.N. chief warned that the Middle East was at its “most dangerous moment.”

Israel has said it would retaliate against Iran’s missile and drone attacks on April 13.

Analysts and observers have been concerned about the risk of the Israel-Gaza war spreading to other parts of the region.

Israel’s attack on Gaza began after the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas attacked Israel on October 7, killing 1,200 people, according to Israeli statistics. According to the local health ministry, the Israeli military offensive has killed more than 33,000 Palestinians in Gaza.

Iran-backed groups have declared support for the Palestinians, launching attacks from Lebanon, Yemen and Iraq.
