First phase of voting People’s House Elections have begun in 21 states and union territories: Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Manipur, May Galaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Rajasthan, Sikkim, Tamil Nadu, Tripura, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, West Bengal, Andamani Kobar Islands, Jammu and Kashmir, Lakshadweep and Pondicherry.
More than 16.63 billion voters, including 8.4 billion men and 8.23 billion women, will cast their votes at 1.87 lakh polling stations. Voting opens at 7 a.m. and closes at 6 p.m.
The elections to five seats in Jammu and Kashmir will be held in five phases, nearly five years after the abrogation of Article 370. Notable candidates in the first phase include Union ministers Nitin Gadkari, Bhupendra Yadav, Kiren Rijiju, Sanjeev Baliyan, Jitendra Singh, Arjun Ram Meghwal and Sarbananda Sonowal. Also in the fray are Congress’s Gaurav Gogoi, DMK’s Kanimozhi and BJP’s Tamil Nadu president K Annamalai.
While Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is seeking a stronger majority, the opposition India Bloc is hoping for an economic rebound. In 2019, the UPA won 45 of the 102 seats and the NDA won 41 on Friday. As part of the delimitation exercise, six of the seats have been re-demarcated.
The general election to elect the 543 members of the 18th Lok Sabha will be held in seven phases from April 19 to June 1, and the results will be announced on June 4.

In Ramtek, the battle is between Shyamkumar Barwe of the Congress and Raju Parwe, the candidate of the Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena.
Polling for the sole Lok Sabha seat in Andaman and Nicobar Islands has begun amid tight security. There are 315,000 voters, of which 164,000 men and 151,000 women are eligible to vote. Special polling stations were set up for 39 voters of the Great Nicobar Tribe of the Channel Islands, 68 members of the Onge Tribe of Hut Bay and 98 voters of the Shompen Tribe of Great Nicobar Island.

Lok Sabha polls 2024: Polling begins in 21 states and Union Territories
For Nagaland’s lone Lok Sabha, a quarter of polling stations have been marked as critical and vulnerable. More than 13.25 million voters will decide the fate of the three candidates at 2,342 polling stations. Of those, 588 have been labeled critical and vulnerable. Voting will begin at 7 a.m. and last until 4 p.m. Nearly 20,000 first-time voters, 22,140 people over the age of 85 and 6,707 people with disabilities are eligible to vote today.
Chief Electoral Commissioner (CEC) Rajiv Kumar has urged voters across the country to participate in the first phase of general elections today. “More than Rs 16 crore of voter slips have been distributed in the first phase. This is an invitation letter that is being delivered to your house saying this is your polling station. This is your voter list. Please come and vote. Youth, Male , women, seniors, all the poll workers we are looking for are well trained and will welcome you very, very politely.”
